How to Approach a Difficult Research Paper

Research papers feel hard because two problems arrive at once: you must decide what to say, and you must find the evidence to support it. Separating those two jobs makes both manageable.

Narrow until the question is answerable

"Social media and mental health" is a field, not a question. "How does daily short-video use relate to reported sleep quality among undergraduates?" is a question you can actually answer within a word limit.

Do a scoping pass before a deep pass

Spend one session finding out what the literature broadly says and where it disagrees. Disagreement is where your paper lives — a topic everyone agrees on gives you nothing to argue.

Build an evidence table

  • Source, method, sample, key finding, limitation, how you will use it.
  • Ten rows in a table beat forty pages of highlighted PDFs when you start writing.

Write the argument before the prose

Draft your claim and the three or four reasons that support it as bare sentences. If the logic holds in that skeletal form, the paper will hold when expanded.
