How to Review Your Own Work Before You Submit

Proofreading is not reviewing. Reviewing asks whether the paper does what the assignment required; proofreading only asks whether the sentences are clean.

Pass one: requirements

Checklist in one hand, draft in the other. Tick only what you can point to. Anything unticked gets fixed before you touch the prose.

Pass two: evidence

Highlight every claim that carries weight. Each one needs a citation or a stated reason. Uncited assertion is the single most common source of grader comments.

Pass three: depth

Mark each paragraph D for description or A for analysis. If the Ds dominate an analytical assignment, you have found your revision priority.

Pass four: mechanics

Now proofread — read it aloud, check the reference list against the in-text citations, confirm formatting and file type. Do this last, so you are not polishing sentences you were always going to delete.
