What Does "Analyze" Mean in a College Assignment?

"Analyze" is the most common instruction word in college assignments and the most commonly misread. Students who lose marks here have usually written something accurate — it just was not analysis.

The short definition

To analyze is to break something into its parts, examine how those parts relate, and explain what that relationship means. The output is an explanation of how or why something works, not an account of what it is.

Description versus analysis, side by side

  • Description: "The company reduced staffing by 12% in 2024."
  • Analysis: "The 12% reduction fell almost entirely in customer service, which explains the simultaneous rise in complaint resolution times — cost savings were transferred to the customer as delay."

Ask whether the paragraph answers a why or how question. If it only answers what, when or who, it is description. Description is not wasted — it sets up analysis — but it should rarely exceed a quarter of an analytical assignment.

Sentence patterns that force analysis

  • "This matters because…"
  • "The significance of this is…"
  • "One explanation is X; a stronger one is Y, because…"
  • "Taken together, these two findings suggest…"
