Assignment Planning for Working College Students

Advice written for full-time residential students assumes a kind of time you do not have. Planning around 45-minute blocks is not a compromise — for working students it is the only method that survives contact with reality.

Plan backward from the deadline

Start at the due date and walk backward through revision, drafting, reading and searching. You will usually find that the real start date is a week earlier than it felt.

Design 45-minute sessions with one output each

  • Session output: a checklist, six saved sources, notes on two articles, one outlined section, one drafted section.
  • A session with no defined output becomes an hour of re-reading the prompt.

Use the small gaps for small work

Commutes and breaks are good for reading abstracts, checking citation formats or listing questions. Save the uninterrupted blocks for drafting, which does not survive interruption.

Decide your minimum viable submission early

Know which parts are non-negotiable if the week goes wrong. Deciding that in advance is far better than making the call at 2 a.m.
